From 3 November
Replacement buses between Marco de Canaveses and Régua
From 3 November to 24 March buses replace the trains on one stretch of the line.
From 3 November to 24 March, replacement buses cover the section between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. Direct buses run from Caíde to Régua. Services stopping at every station start at Marco de Canaveses, so your route depends on the connection you choose. Traffic and weather can alter bus timings.
The direct bus stops in Caíde's station square and at the shelters opposite Régua station on the EN108. Your onward train leaves from Régua. Expect four daily arrivals at Pinhão during the works, with the last return train leaving Pinhão at 17:15. The evening return at 20:24 no longer runs.

Which side
Which side of the train to sit on
The river is on your right towards Pinhão once the railway reaches the valley around Pala.
For the river, sit on the right facing Pinhão. That advice follows from CP's description of the north bank route. The valley views begin around Pala after Marco de Canaveses, so the riverside stretch comes later in your journey. The train follows that bank through Régua.
On the return from Pinhão, sit on the left facing Porto for the river. The railway stays on the north bank. Beyond Ferradosa towards Pocinho, the railway crosses the river and the view moves to the left. You reach Pinhão before that crossing.

The historic train
The historic train from Régua to Tua
CP's historic service uses five carriages hauled by a diesel locomotive.
The Douro Historical Train runs from Régua to Tua. Your ticket covers the return journey. It costs €60.00 per adult, with the same carriage and seat for both directions. Travel from Porto is separate, so you need to arrange that journey around the historic departure.
The weekend season runs from 6 June to 18 October. Extra Wednesday departures run from 22 July. In harvest: those Wednesday trains finish on 30 September. Choose this service if you want the historic carriages and scheduled stops; regular trains give you more departure choices.
Reception at Régua starts at 15:00 with a glass of port and regional entertainment. The train leaves at 15:32 and reaches Tua at 16:35. The return includes time at Pinhão station. You leave Tua at 17:07 and stop at Pinhão from 17:25 to 17:50 before reaching Régua at 18:22.
To reach Régua for the historic departure, the 11:30 from Campanhã arrives at 13:32. Buy the historic ticket through CP online or at a ticket office if you have chosen a running day. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. CP refunds the fare if it cancels the journey.

Short answers with the figures above.
How much does the train from Porto to Pinhão cost?
The full adult InterRegional fare is €12.45 one way from São Bento or €12.35 one way from Campanhã. Pinhão's ticket office is closed daily. You can buy through CP online or in its app. Buy on board only if no sales channel exists at the station or within 200 m, approaching the inspector before taking a seat.
Do you need to change trains for Pinhão?
No, the direct InterRegional services need no change until 2 November. Morning through trains start at Campanhã. The 13:35 from São Bento changes at Marco de Canaveses; the 20:24 return from Pinhão changes at Régua and Marco. From 3 November to 24 March, you use replacement buses before rejoining the train at Régua.
How many trains a day go to Pinhão?
Six daily journeys reach Pinhão from Porto until 2 November, including weekends. Five are direct InterRegional trains; the other uses a change at Marco de Canaveses. During the works, four daily trains reach Pinhão from Régua. The first arrives at 11:31 and the last at 20:12, so an early boat departure may no longer fit.
Is the Douro train scenic the whole way?
No, the railway begins to follow the valley around Pala after Marco de Canaveses. The river stretch comes later. Sit on the right facing Pinhão for that stretch, or the left when returning towards Porto. From 3 November to 24 March, part of this riverside railway journey is replaced by a bus.
