Places to visit in the Douro Valley

Three towns, the viewpoints and the quintas: five pages with the visiting costs and the connections that decide your day. Pinhão keeps a boat trip and a quinta within a walk of the station; Peso da Régua has the museum; Lamego adds a bus; a car suits the hillside viewpoints. Until 2 November the 7:30 train from Porto Campanhã reaches Pinhão at 9:51; from 3 November to 24 March replacement buses cover part of the journey. In harvest: book the quinta first.

Best for one day

Pinhão and the quintas

If you want a tasting and a boat trip in one day, Pinhão keeps both within reach of the station. Bomfim is 0.7 km away on foot. The viewpoints wait for a day with road transport beyond town.

Best without a car

Peso da Régua

Peso da Régua suits you if the wine region's background interests you and you want an indoor visit after arriving by train. The museum has a wheelchair for visitors. A day cruise leaves less time ashore; take the train if the museum is your main reason for coming.

Best for the harvest

The quintas near Pinhão

September to early October is Bomfim's harvest window; Quinta da Roêda offers grape treading by advance booking. In harvest: book grape treading separately from your tasting. Roêda is 2.0 km on foot from Pinhão station, so arrange a taxi if that walk would crowd your booking.

All questions

What are the best places to visit in the Douro Valley?

Pinhão suits a boat trip and a quinta visit within walking distance of its railway station. Régua suits the Douro Museum, where entry costs €8 per adult. Lamego has the 686 steps at Remédios. Choose Casal de Loivos for a view over Pinhão if you have road transport; stay beside the river if another transfer would crowd your day. Book your quinta before adding other stops.

What is the prettiest town in the Douro Valley?

I'd choose Pinhão if you want river views and a quinta you can reach on foot. The station has 24 azulejo panels. Walk 0.7 km from there to Quinta do Bomfim for a booked visit. Lamego suits you better if the staircase and cathedral are the reason for coming; it needs a bus from Régua.

Can you see the Douro Valley by train?

Yes, the Linha do Douro serves Régua and Pinhão from Porto. From 3 November to 24 March, buses replace trains between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. The replacement buses cannot carry wheelchairs. Trains continue from Régua to Pinhão. Lamego needs another bus. Use the train for river towns if you want to avoid driving; hillside viewpoints still need road transport beyond the station.

How many days do you need in the Douro Valley?

One day suits Pinhão if you want a boat trip and a booked quinta visit. The Romaneira boat trip takes one hour. Allow a separate day for Lamego if you want the staircase and cathedral without fitting them between connections. Keep the museum in Régua for a day when you have time ashore; a cruise can leave only a short stop.

Which places can you visit in the Douro Valley without a car?

Pinhão and Peso da Régua both have stations on the Linha do Douro. From Pinhão station, the Carvalhas tasting room is 1.1 km away on foot. From Régua, bus 103 takes you to Lamego for €0.90 per adult single. Book visits around your return connection. A taxi suits a hillside viewpoint if that is your priority; staying in town avoids another transfer.
